Originally called Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a remembrance of all who died in service to their country. While there is some dispute as to the origin of the holiday, it was first observed on May 30, 1868, in Waterloo, NY. The day is typically commemorated with a parade, followed by placing flowers on the graves of the dead. In 1971, the National Holiday Act permanently changed the holiday to the last Monday in May.
